Avis Driving Tips

The way you drive and care for your car can affect how much fuel you use. Some driving habits can increase fuel consumption by up to 20% more than necessary. To help you get better mileage we've put together our top 10 tips for driving safely, reducing your vehicle emissions, and saving you money by reducing your fuel consumption.

  1. Drive Smoothly

Try to avoid fast acceleration and braking -fast acceleration can use up a lot more fuel.
When driving a manual, change gear at 1500 to 2500 rpm to save up to 15% on fuel - and reduce emissions by the same amount. When driving an automatic, switch overdrive on to keep the engine speed down and save fuel. Using Cruise Control on the open road will also help maintain a constant speed and lower fuel consumption.

  3. Plan Your Journeys

Plan your journeys to avoid peak periods, road works and getting lost. You will have a more relaxing journey and waste less fuel. At Avis you can hire a Garmin GPS unit to help you navigate and plan your travels easily.

  4. Limit Your Speed

Optimise your fuel consumption, reduce your emissions and avoid speeding fines by observing the speed limit. When you reduce your speed by 10 km/hr you can save approximately 10% on fuel.

  5. Avoid Short Journeys

Short journeys on a cold engine use up to 20% more fuel than a warmed up engine and also produced higher carbon emissions as the engine is working harder.

  6. Concentrate

Look ahead and anticipate the road conditions and other people's actions, maintaining safe following distances help you stay at a more constant speed. This reduces the need for hard braking and acceleration and therefore helps reduce fuel consumption.

  7. Keeping Cool

Only use air conditioning when you really need it, and turn it off 10 minutes before you arrive at your destination to save even more. In some cars, running air conditioning can use up to 10% more fuel.

  8. Empty the Boot

Heavier vehicles use more fuel because the engine has to work harder. To reduce fuel consumption further, remove heavy items from the boot and leave them at your home or office when you're not using them.

  9. Don't Rev the Engine

Avoid revving the engine unnecessarily - this wastes fuel and increases harmful emissions.

  10. Care for Your Car

Keeping your tyres at the right pressure and keeping your engine regularly serviced helps improve your fuel economy. At Avis we ensure that a 48 point quality and safety check is done on each vehicle before it is rented, this covers items such as tyre pressure and tread, engine oil, coolant and battery fluids, transmission, wiper blades, and much more. So you can be confident that before you collect your vehicle, it has been thoroughly prepared for you.
