New Zealand's impressive natural beauty and well-maintained highways means it's a road-tripper's paradise. The best way to see the best the country has to offer is by renting a car, and Avis offers a variety of rental vehicle options to suit everyone from single travelers to large families.

Auckland Airport Information

Auckland Airport has one international and one domestic terminal. The terminals are a 10-minute walk apart or you can take a free transfer bus, which comes every 15 minutes.

Over 50 international and domestic airlines operate out of Auckland Airport including Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Emirates, Jetstar, United, Singapore Airlines, and Thai Airways.

Some of the most common origins for flights arriving at Auckland include Los Angeles and Honolulu in the USA; Denpasar, Tokyo, and Kuala Lumpur in Asia, and London, England. The airport also serves all the major Australian airports, and popular domestic flights include Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown.

The airport is located around 20km south of central Auckland and it's around a 25-minute drive via State Highway 20. There are also plenty of public transport options to reach Auckland or Manukau including regular and shuttle buses and train-bus services.

Drivers can fuel up at the Z-Skyway service station on George Bolt Memorial Drive, directly after leaving the airport, and there are several other service stations in the vicinity whether you're heading north into the city, or to the east.

Things to Do and See Near Auckland Airport

The major attraction of Auckland is the city itself. This multicultural metropolis has so much to offer in terms of food and wine, shopping, culture, hiking, and beaches, that you can easily base yourself here for a week or too without running out of things to do.

If you have a flight out in the evening and you're looking for some fun activities near the airport itself, Butterfly Creek zoo and playground is popular with families. There's also the Rocket Roaps activity park, and the Botanic Gardens – a pleasant place for anyone to spend the day with 54 hectares of gardens and walkways to explore.

For a better bird's eye view of the city than you'll get from the plane, you can take a helicopter ride from Helicopter Me, based at the airport – you even have the opportunity to fly the helicopter yourself!
