Renter Requirements
Prepay Terms
- Your credit or debit card will be charged the full cost of the rental reserved inclusive of fees, taxes and surcharges upon confirmation of your reservation. Method of pre-payment toward your rental may not be changed after confirmation. In the event your charge card is declined, you will not receive a rental confirmation and you will not prepay for the rental.
- At the time of rental prevailing exchange rates will apply.
- Credit cards are the only acceptable form of payment for Pay Now rates. Debit cards are not accepted at many Avis locations and are not a recommended form of prepayment for ancillary incidental items.
- The credit card used at the counter must be in the name of the renter.
- If you need to cancel 6 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up time, we will refund the full prepaid amount, less a $25.00 USD processing fee.
- If you do not cancel your reservation within 6 hours of the scheduled pick-up time or if you fail to rent the vehicle, a refund of the full prepaid amount, less a NO SHOW fee of $100.00 USD, will be charged.
- Please retain your reservation confirmation number, as it is necessary for modification, cancellation or no-show refund requests.
- Cancellation and no-show refund requests must be made on Avis.com using the View/Modify/Cancel Reservation Form. You may cancel and request a refund on Avis.com at any time before 6 hours of your pick-up by entering the reservation number and last name into the appropriate fields on the View/Modify/Cancel Reservation form on Avis.com. Once the reservation is displayed, click the "cancel" link and continue through the process to submit the refund request. Refund (prepaid amount minus the cancellation fee) will automatically be issued to the card that you prepaid with.
- If you cancel your reservation within 6 hours or you fail to show for your reservation, you may request a refund by entering the reservation number and last name into the appropriate fields on the View/Modify/Cancel Reservation form on Avis.com. Once the reservation is displayed, click on the "request a refund" link and continue through the process to submit the refund request. Refund (prepaid amount minus the no show fee) will automatically be issued to the card that you prepaid with. Requests for no show refunds may be submitted up to six months after the rental pick up date.
- Unlike other vehicle rental company or 3rd party websites, an Avis Prepay reservation allows you to make changes at any time, even multiple times, with no fee. Permissible changes include vehicle type, options (GPS, protections, etc.), rental period dates/times and many changes to your rental location.* Changes must be made either on Avis.com or at the rental counter. At time of change, current rates, taxes and fees apply. *You may change your rental location to any other participating location in your original pick-up country. However, to change to a non-participating location or one outside of the original pick-up country, you must cancel your original reservation (with applicable cancellation fee) and re-book at then current rates.
- Your quoted rental rate is based on the exact parameters (locations, dated, etc.) of your particular rental. Changing your confirmed reservation parameters could result in a different rate.
- At time of rental pick-up, location rental qualification rules apply. The name on all rental credentials (license and credit or debit card) must match the name on the reservation. If the names do not match, for security purposes the prepaid reservation must be cancelled and a new reservation made at prevailing rates. A refund request for the cancelled reservation must be made on Avis.com and $100.00 USD processing fee will apply. Name may not be changed after reservation confirmation.
- At the time of pick up, driver must present a valid driver's license and credit card (or debit card at participating locations) in the driver's name. A prepaid charge card is not an acceptable credential. All drivers must have a safe driving record.
- While a charge card is an acceptable form of rental prepayment online, they may not be accepted for the credit hold required when you pick up your vehicle.
- Please review the terms and conditions on our confirmation page regarding credit or debit card acceptance at the location. To release the vehicle to you at time of pick-up, all rental terms and conditions must be met, regardless of your original prepayment.
- The card presented at pickup will be the card of record for the rental.
- If you use a debit card at a location that accepts them, we will perform a credit check to ensure worthiness before releasing the vehicle and you must also present a second form of current identification.
- Your total rental rate is calculated based on the information provided at time of reservation.
- Vehicles are rented on a daily (24-hour) basis. There is a 29-minute grace period for returns. After 30 minutes late, full-day late charges + taxes apply. There is no grace period for rental fees, surcharges and optional equipment or protections charges, so full-day late charges will apply for these items.
- If your plans change and you no longer require the rental, you must cancel this reservation before the scheduled pick up time or the applicable no show fee will apply.
- Coupons may be applied to prepay rentals. The rate on the rental and the amount prepaid will not reflect the coupon amount. The value of the coupon will be deducted from the rental charges at time of return. If the final charges are less than the prepaid amount, the customer will receive a refund within 3 business days.
- Vouchers or Avis rental certificates cannot be used in conjunction with a prepay reservation.
- Gift Cards (Avis or any other) are not allowed on prepay reservations.
- Generally, at the time of rental, we'll require a credit card hold of total estimated charges less any prepayment. A prepaid charge card is not accepted for this required hold.
- Underpayments will be handled at the counter at time of rental return, and overpayments will be refunded after the rental agreement is closed. Unfortunately, we can't promise that your prepaid daily vehicle rate will apply if you change vehicle types, lengthen or shorten your rental period or change your pick up location.
- Upon returning the vehicle, Avis will process a release of the unused portion of the hold subject to your bank's procedure. This hold may take up to two weeks to be released by your bank.
- If you have already paid toward your rental using a debit card, we will reverse any hold when the rental is over. The bank, however, may take time to post it back to the account. While this hold is in place, the funds will not be available for your use.
- If you fail to return the vehicle as agreed, Avis will obtain additional authorizations from your account to cover the rental charges.
- Avis is not responsible for any returned checks or overdrafts based on this policy.
- Prepaid Debit/Gift cards are not acceptable methods of credit identification to pick up a car at any location. One of the above mentioned cards must be presented. Prepaid Debit/Gift cards are accepted at time of return only.
- Positive identification in addition to your driver's license may be required.
- Extensions or late returns result in additional charges.
- The equipment/service charges displayed may vary at time of rental pick up.
- The protection/coverage charges displayed are a guide only for rentals taking place at the selected location and may vary by age of renter, location, type of vehicle and rate.

Optional Coverages
We offer several optional coverages designed to reduce your financial responsibility and provide peace of mind during your rental.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
CDW reduces the amount you pay for each separate incident of damage to the rental vehicle, or for replacement of lost or stolen keys, accessories, or documents.
The amount you pay per incident is the lower of:
- The applicable cost under our Theft, Loss & Damages Policy, or
- The excess shown on your Rental Agreement Form.
Typical price: EUR 22.00 - EUR 34.00 per day.
If you choose not to purchase CDW, you are considered to be declining CDW
- You assume full financial responsibility up to the full value of the vehicle.
- You must provide written proof of thirdparty coverage valid for car hire in Ireland.
- A EUR 5,000 hold will be placed on your payment card.
- A EUR 30 administration fee applies when external insurance is used.
Super Damage Waiver (SCDW)
An excessreduction product that reduces your CDW excess to zero (or to the minimum noted on your Rental Agreement Form).
Typical price: EUR 24.00 - EUR 35.00 per day depending on car group.
Theft Protection Waiver (TP)
TP reduces the amount you pay if the vehicle is stolen during your rental. The amount you pay will be the lower of:
- The applicable cost under the Theft, Loss & Damages Policy; or
- The excess shown on your Rental Agreement Form.
Typical price: EUR 10.00 per day.
Super Theft Protection (STP)
An excessreduction product that reduces your TP excess to zero. STP is automatically included with Super Damage Waiver.
Windscreen Protection
This protection reduces the amount you pay to zero if your windscreen is damaged during the rental.
Typical price: EUR 6.00 per day.
Roadside Assistance Plus
Provides roadside assistance at no additional charge for breakdowns caused by driver error (e.g., lost keys, misfuelling, battery issues).
Typical price: EUR 8.00 per day.
Credit Card Policies
We accept physical copies of the following payment cards:
- American Express (excluding American Express Traveller's Cheque cards)
- Diners Cards

- Visa credit and debit cards

Debit Card: Visa and Mastercard debit cards are acccepted; however, you must purchase our Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) to reduce your financial responsibility to zero.

Excess Hold
Unless confirmed otherwise, the amount of the pre-authorisation taken on pick-up of the rental vehicle is calculated as follows:
- The Excess Amount - From EUR 2,000.00 to EUR 4,500.00, depending on the car selected. The exact amount for your booking is clearly displayed during the booking process.
- The rental price, including pre-selected optional extras.
- Fuel Deposit.
- Any Pay Now payments already made will be deducted
Debit Card Policies
Debit cards (Visa or Mastercard) may be used; however:
- Customers must purchase SCDW
- PINenabled cards will require PIN authorisation
- Prepaid/specificationvalue payment cards are not accepted
Drivers License
In the Republic of Ireland, all drivers must present a physical copy of a full, valid, unendorsed driving licence which they have held for at least 2 years.
- UK licence holders: Must provide a DVLA 'Share Driving Licence' printout issued within 21 days of pickup.
- NonEnglish licences: Require an International Driving Permit.
- We reserve the right to ask prequalifying insurancehistory questions. Rental may be refused based on your responses.
Drivers with 2 or more unspent driving convictions or one unspent driving conviction from the list below will not be eligible to rent.
- Careless, reckless or dangerous driving
- Driving or attempting to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks
- Theft or unauthorised taking of a vehicle
- Drivers who have been disqualified (or anything similar) in the last 10 years will not be eligible to rent.
Failure to disclose any driving convictions may mean you are fully liable for damage caused to the rental vehicle or any third party.
Licence Requirements
Drivers must present a physical copy of their full valid unendorsed driving licence which they have held for a minimum of two years and have been eligible to hold for at least the number of years specified:
- 8 years, including 2 years full licence, for standard cars.
- 10 years, including 2 years full licence, for people carriers.
- 12 years, including 2 years full licence, for 4x4, premium, or luxury cars.
If a licence does not show the driver has held it for the minimum period, then they must provide evidence, such as:
- previous driving licences; or
- a letter from their driving licence authority stating that they have held it for this minimum period.
Valid Forms of ID
Along with your driving licence, further security checks may require:
- The payment card used to make your booking.
- A valid photo ID (passport, driving licence, or national ID card)
- Proof of address for Irish residents (utility bill or bank statement)
If you do not pass identification checks, your driving licence cannot be used as proof of address.
Personal Accident Insurance
PAI provides cover for the driver and personal items in the vehicle in the event of an accident.
Benefits include:
- Up to EUR 25,000 in the event of death, permanent disability, loss of limbs or eyes
- Medical assistance and rescue costs (conditions apply)
- Personal effects up to EUR 1,500
- EUR 30 excess applies
PAI is underwritten by Chubb Limited. Cost: EUR 8.00 per day.
Public Liability and Property Damage
Public liability insurance is mandatory in accordance with the insurance laws of Ireland. Customer may inquire at the time of rental for additional information of the benefits, conditions, and acceptance.
Note: Some credit cards provide insurance coverage, with certain limitations, as a benefit of using the card to rent vehicles. The customer is advised to contact the card issuer before the rental. Any waiver must be discussed directly with the location upon arrival.
Additional Drivers
Additional drivers must:
- Meet the same licence and ID requirements as the main driver
- Be approved and listed on the Rental Agreement Form
The charge for each additional driver is EUR 11.35 per day. The primary renter is responsible for all costs incurred by additional drivers.
Age
Minimum Age
There is no minimum age requirement; however, the licence requirements as above must be met.
Maximum Age
There is no maximum age however Customers over 76 may rent subject to:
- They must drive regularly.
- A letter from their insurer dated within 6 weeks confirming no accidents in the last 5 years
- A doctor's letter dated within 6 weeks confirming good health
- They may be required to undergo a driving assessment accompanied by an Avis representative.

Cancellations/No Shows
Free Cancellation
Cancel your booking using the "My Bookings" section of the website up to 48 hours before pickup for free. Bookings are free to cancel. You will get a full refund if you cancel up to 48 hours before pickup time. You will get a full refund less EUR 65.00 if you cancel within 48 hours. No refund is provided in the case of a no-show.

You can amend your booking at no charge, either through the call center or on-line. Bear in mind that any changes to the rental my result in a different rate.

Child Seats
We offer child seats suitable for:
Ages 9 months - 4years (9-18 kg)
Ages 4-11 years (15-36 kg) booster seats
Price: EUR 45.40 per rental. Replacement cost for lost/damaged seats: EUR 100-EUR 150.
Correct installation of the child seat is the renter's responsibility.
Cross Border Driving
Travel into Northern Ireland is permitted with a EUR 34.00 crossborder fee, which covers crossborder breakdown retrieval.
Vehicles may not be taken outside the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland.
Declining Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) / Theft Protection
Declining CDW / Theft Protection
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and Theft Protection insurance reduce your financial liability for damage or theft of the vehicle.
By declining these insurances you are taking responsibility to arrange your own cover and assume full financial liability up to the value of the vehicle for losses arising as a result of loss or damage to the vehicle. Written proof of CDW and Theft Protection coverage in Ireland will be required when picking up the vehicle .
We recommend that you fully understand the conditions of cover provided by your credit card company when using your card for insurance cover. Please ensure you contact your Credit Card Provider to ensure they cover the Republic of Ireland.
Customers declining CDW and Theft Protection are required
- To leave a liability deposit or a charge card hold of 5,000 EUR.
- To pay an administration fee of 30.00 EUR applies for use of this service.
For any claims made when using insurance other than Avis, then we will deal with the renter and not with their insurance provider.
Extending your rental
To extend your rental, contact the station where the vehicle was collected. Contact details appear on your Rental Agreement Form.
Fines
Fines
You are responsible for all fines and charges, including:
- Parking fines
- Toll charges
- Clamping and towing costs
- Speeding or traffic fines
If Avis must settle a fine on your behalf, a EUR 30 administration fee will be charged in addition to the fine.
Returns
The General Conditions provide more information about what happens if you want to extend your rental, or if you do not return the vehicle to us as agreed.
The late return processing fee is an extra day's rental for each day or part of a day until the vehicle is returned at 'pay at location' prices.
Failure to return your vehicle to the correct car park will result in a EUR 60 fee plus parking charges incurred being applied to your rental agreement. Information on returning your car can be found here: https://www.avis.ie/returns.

Toll charges will be automatically billed to the customer's payment card three days after the rental period ends.
- The toll cost is EUR 3.80 for cars. Additionally, a EUR 1.00 processing fee applies per crossing.
- This charge covers the M50 toll road only.
- Renters need to pay at the Toll booth on all other roads.

Fuel
Fuel charges - traditional fuel (diesel or petrol) and hybrid vehicles
We offer Petrol, Diesel, and Hybrid Cars for rent. Return the vehicle with the same fuel level as collected to avoid refuelling charges.
Fuel Policy
Vehicles are supplied with a full tank, which is charged at pickup. If returned full, the fuel cost will be refunded. If the vehicle is returned underfilled without a fuel receipt, refuelling charges apply.
