Optional Coverages

Collision Damage Insurance (Non taxable)
This insurance provides cover for damage to the avis vehicle caused by means other than by theft or attempted theft. A non-waivable excess applies which is the renters responsibility.
Where CDW is declined, renters are responsible for the full value of the car and in the event of any damage it will be billed automatically to their credit card.
Where the customer believes an arrangement exists regarding insurance cover on their credit card we must explain that such an agreement is between them and their credit card company. Avis cannot guarantee any level of insurance on their credit card.
If you have your own insurance cover, you must produce a copy of your motor insurance policy at the time of rental.
For customers who are only taking the basic insurance, but not the additional insurance to reduce the excess to 0 at the time of rental, we will take authorisation for the excess amount (varies depending on size of the vehicle from EUR 1322.00 to 2643.00 + vat) on the customers credit card.
Declining Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)/Theft Protection
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and Theft Protection insurance reduces your financial liability for damage or theft of the vehicle.
By declining these insurances you are taking responsibility to arrange your own cover and assume full financial liability up to the value of the vehicle for losses arising as a result of loss or damage to the vehicle. Written proof of CDW and Theft Protection coverage in Ireland will be required when picking up the vehicle.
We recommend that you fully understand the conditions of cover provided by your credit card company when using your card for insurance cover. Please ensure you contact your Credit Card Provider to ensure they cover the Republic Of Ireland.

Customers declining CDW and Theft Protection are required

  • To leave a liability deposit or a charge card hold of EUR 5,000.00.
  • To pay an administration fee of EUR 30.00 applies for the use of this service.

For any claims made when using insurance other than Avis, then we will deal with the renter and not with their insurance provider.
If you have your own insurance cover, you must produce a copy of your motor insurance policy at the time of rental.

We do not accept third party travel protection collision damage or reimbursement policies.
Windscreen protection - reduce excess to zero for damage to front windscreen.  Also available separately at a cost of 4.00 EUR per day
Super CDW 
SCDW is sold only at the counter at time of check out. When SCDW is accepted the collision and theft excess is eliminated.

Customer is still liable for loss of keys. 

For customers who are only taking the basic insurance, but not the additional insurance to reduce the excess to 0 at the time of rental, we will take authorisation for the excess amount (varies depending on the size of the vehicle 1322 to 2643 EUR + vat) on the customers credit card.

Note: Where CDI and/or TP and Super Coverages are declined, renters are responsible for the full value of the Avis car and in the event of any damage or theft. The counter will get authorization on the renters credit card for the value of the amount for which the customer is liable for. This is to ensure that there are funds available in case of an accident.

Drivers License

Customers must have been eligible to hold a valid drivers licence for 8 years of which 2 must be at a full drivers licence qualification.

To rent a People Carrier, customers must have been eligible to hold a valid drivers licence for 10 years of which 2 must be at a full drivers licence qualification.

To rent a Minibus, a 4x4, Executive, Premium or a Luxury Car, customers must have been eligible to hold a valid drivers licence for 12 years of which 2 must be at a full drivers licence qualification.

Customers with a new photocard drivers licence must produce both the photocard and its paper counterpart.  Visitors from overseas must produce a driving licence issued in their permanent country of residence, along with a translation into English (where appropriate).  Only the renter or drivers approved by Avis are permitted to drive the vehicle.

UK Driving Licences have 1 part - a plastic, credit card-sized photo card licence.  You must bring this original valid photo card driving licence with you if it is a new style UK licence.  Failure to bring a valid photo card driving license will result in the rental being refused.  We may require customers to consent to their licence records being accessed as needed. Expired photo card licences will not be accepted and rental will be refused.&nbps; All UK customers will need to hold a full and valid licence free from any endorsements excluded in our terms & conditions.
If any driver has any unspent driving convictions for:
- careless, reckless or dangerous driving,
- driving or attempting to drive whilst under the influence of drink or drugs
- using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks,
- theft or unauthorised taking of a vehicle - or
- been disqualified (or anything similar) in the last 10 years or if you have 2 or more unspent convictions for offences not listed above, your rental will be refused.
If you fail to disclose any driving convictions you may be fully liable for any damage to our vehicle or third party vehicle.

Public liability insurance is in accordance with the insurance laws of the country.  Customer may inquire at the time of rental for additional information of the benefits, conditions and acceptance.

Note: Some credit cards provide insurance coverage, with certain limitations, as a benefit of using the card to rent vehicles.  The customer is advised to contact the card issuer before the rental.  Any waiver must be discussed directly with the location upon arrival.


Additional Drivers

The charge for an additional driver is 9.50 EUR including VAT per day per additional driver.
Terms of rental for an additional driver are the same as the main driver.


Age

The renter must be over 25 years old to rent standard cars in Ireland.

The renter must have been eligible to hold a valid driving licence for 8 years of which 2 years must be at a

full driving licence qualification.

To rent a people carrier, customers must have been eligible to hold a valid driving licence for 10 years of

which 2 years must be at full driver's licence qualification.

Restrictions may be reduced where renters provide their own fully comprehensive insurance cover, by

For any customers that are aged 76 years and over, Avis requires the following:

  • Confirm that you drive on a regular basis.
  • Provide us with a letter from your insurance company to confirm that you have an up to date insurance

    policy, and have not had any accident in the past 5 years.

  • Provide us with a letter from your doctor confirming that you are in good health and fit to drive.
  • The Avis rental agent may ask to sit in the car with you to assess your driving.

Cancellations/No Shows

If you cancel your booking on the same day the reservation is made, no cancellation fee will be applied.

If you cancel your booking up to 3 days prior to collection a cancellation fee of 40 EUR/ 50 EUR will apply by way of compensation to AFC.

If you fail to cancel your reservation within 3 days prior to the rental date and time shown in your booking, the full amount of the prepayment will be charged by way of compensation to AFC.

In order to obtain a refund of the amount you have paid for your voucher (where applicable) you must write to the following address requesting the money be refunded.

To clarify, no refund will be given if:

  • You do not use any part of your reservation period; or
  • You change your booking and the charges for the Rental Services are less than the amount you paid for the original booking.


Changing your Booking

You can amend your booking at no charge, either through the call centre or on-line. Bear in mind that any changes to the rental may result in a different rate.


Additional Fees

Due to winter conditions between November 15 and March 15 the entire Avis fleet in Germany is equipped with winter tires. The fee for winter tires is included in the total price.

 


Age Requirements

 

How old do I need to be to drive a rental vehicle?

To drive our vehicles, you and all of your drivers need to be at least 19 years old and have held a full, valid driving licence for at least 1/2 year at the start of your rental. Renters under 21 can only rent car group A. Renters 21 and up can rent all car groups except for car groups F, J and all Porsche vehicles, the renter must be 25. .

I'm under 25; do I need to pay a young driver surcharge?

If you or any of your drivers are under 25 when you pick up the vehicle, you will each have to pay a young driver surcharge. The cost for this will depend on where you are picking the vehicle up from but you can expect it to be between 11,90 EUR and 14,64 EUR per day, for each driver.
If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get cover for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.

Are there any maximum age restrictions?

No, so long as you hold a full, valid driving licence for at least 1/2 year.


Fuel Policy

Should I bring the vehicle back with a full tank of fuel?
Yes. The vehicle will normally be supplied with a full tank of fuel. You must return it to us with the same amount of fuel it had in it when you picked it up usually a full tank as shown on the factory-installed fuel gauge. We recommend you fill up as close to the return location as you can on the return date, and keep the receipt to show us. If you do not return the vehicle with a full tank and you can not show us a receipt for fuel we will charge you.

Fuel Options

I plan to travel more than 120 kilometres, and want peace of mind, do you have a fuel option for me?
Yes, with Fuel Up Front you pay for a full tank of fuel, based on the manufacturer's stated fuel tank capacity for your vehicle plus our costs of refuelling the vehicle for you. Then you just return the vehicle with whatever's left in the tank (even if it's virtually empty) so long as the engine still runs.
How do I calculate the cost of Fuel Up Front?
Depending on where you’re renting, we charge the average fuel price at the start of your rental period as stated on this EU fuel index: However, you don't get a refund for any fuel you don't use.
Can I get Fuel up Front at any time?
No, if you want to take advantage of Fuel Up Front, you must ask for it during the booking process or when you pick up the vehicle.
I plan to travel less than 120 kilometres, do I still need to fill up?
Yes, often the fuel gauges stills look full so we ask you to fill up the tank near to the return location and show us a copy of the receipt. If you don’t have time to fill up the tank, or can’t show us a receipt, we will apply EZ Fuel to cover our costs of refuelling the vehicle for you.
How much is EZ Fuel?
Depending on where you’re renting, you pay of fixed fee of between 26.00 EUR and 32.90 EUR. You retain the right to prove, that no loss or damage has occurred or that the loss or damage occurred is considerably lower than the EZ Fuel Fee.
What are my options if I don’t return the vehicle full and haven’t bought Fuel up Front?
Pay on Return will apply if you have driven more than 120 kilometres and:

  • Don't buy Fuel Up Front
  • Don't return the vehicle with a full tank

How do I calculate the cost of Pay on Return?
You pay for fuel based on the factory-installed fuel gauge rounded down to the nearest eighth (1/8) of a tank. This is based on the manufacturer's stated fuel tank capacity.
We charge between 1.5 and three times the average fuel price at the end of the rental period for the Germany as stated on this EU fuel index.. The price per litre will be stated on your rental agreement. This charge covers our cost of driving to the nearest petrol station at short notice, and potentially delaying the next customer's rental.

 

 

Electric Vehicles

How much battery charge should I return an electric vehicle with?

 

You must return the vehicle with at least a 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up.

What am i charged if I fail to return an electric vehicle with the required 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up?

We charge a fixed amount dependent on the battery life showing on the factory-installed battery gauge. This is the Pay on Return rate. the amounts charged are set out below:

If you wish to extend your rental while on rent, you should contact the station that you picked the car up from. Their contact details will be on the rental agreement you are given at the start of the rental.

I have a disability, do you offer adapted vehicles?
Yes, specially adapted vehicles are available at some of our rental locations. Please call the Reservations team for more information.
I have a disability, do you offer hand controls?
No, regrettably, we do not currently offer hand controls or panoramic mirrors at this time.

Popular optional extras to rent

I have small children, do you offer child seats?
Yes, we offer baby, infant, and child seats. A baby seat is typically suitable for a child from birth to 12 months old and weighing no more than 13 kilos. An infant seat is typically suitable for a child aged 9 months to 4 years old and weighing between 9 and 18 kilos. A child seat is typically suitable for a child aged 4 to 12 years old and weighing between 15 and 36 kilos.
In some rental locations, we may arrange for a third party to fit the seat for you. But remember, it is always your responsibility to check the seat is fitted correctly before you drive away.
Please note: In the Germany, all children must normally use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 150 cm tall.
How much are your child seats?
The fee for renting a seat will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to cost between EUR 13.00 and EUR 16.31 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 6 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum EUR 86.59 and get to use the seat for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.
If the seat is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, range between EUR 80.00 and EUR 200.00 plus the rental costs.
I am not familiar with the area; can I rent a GPS (satellite navigation system)?
Yes, the fee for renting a GPS will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to cost between EUR 11.00 and EUR 13.80 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 14 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 14 days and get to use the GPS for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.

If the GPS is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, range between 209.00 EUR and 260.00 EUR plus the rental costs.
Please note: In some countries, it is against the law to use a GPS that tells you where speed cameras are. It is illegal in Germany. If you rent a GPS from us, it won't give you speed camera information.
Do you offer an audio tour guide service on your GPS?
Yes, it is available with the Travel Companion Full Version at selected stations.
I want to be able to access the internet anywhere I go, do you offer a solution?
Yes, we offer Travel Companion Full Version at selected stations. Here you can connect to 5 devices with unlimited data usage and unlimited international calls. We provide this service on behalf of a third party so you will need to read and agree to separate terms and conditions with them. This terms and conditions have to be signed by yourself on the device at time of rental.
Please note: In many countries, including the Germany, it is illegal to drive while using a handheld mobile phone, tablet or other communications device. It is your responsibility to drive safely and according to the laws of the country you are driving in.
How much does Travel Companion Full version cost?
The fee for hiring Travel Companion Full version will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to be between EUR 13.80 and EUR 16.80 a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 14 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum of 14 days and get to use the Travel Companion Full Version (TCT) for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.
If the mobile Travel Companion device is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, amount to EUR 260.00 plus the rental costs.
If any mobile accessories are damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement. The costs of this are expected to range between EUR 10.00 and EUR 150.00 plus the rental costs.
I am intending to drive along toll roads; do you offer a device to make this quicker and easier for me?
No, unfortunately we do not offer any electronic toll charging devices at this time.

Winter equipment to rent

I am concerned about the road conditions, do you offer all-weather tyres?
Yes, if the rental location you are hiring from is in an area where it’s illegal to drive without all-weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with them and the fee will be included in your rental fee or contract.
We can also supply all-weather tyres for a fee. This will depend on where you’re renting but you can expect it to be between 15 EUR and 18,70 EUR a day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the all-weather tyres for the duration of your rental, up to 28 days.

During winter season (15 November to 15 March), our rental vehicles in germany are equipped with winter tyres. The fee for this is already included in the rental price (deviations possible for business customers).
If any all-weather tyre is damaged, lost or stolen, and if you are responsible for that, you will have to pay for a replacement pair. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, amount to EUR 150.00 and EUR 400.00 plus the rental costs.
In the event that your rental does not already contain all-weather tyres and you want to have these tyres, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. If you need them at shorter notice, please call the Reservations team.

I am going skiing, do you offer snow chains?
Yes, if the rental location you are hiring from is in an area where it is illegal to drive without Snow Chains or all-weather tyres at certain times of year, the vehicle will automatically be supplied with snow chains and the fee will be included in your rental fee. You can ask not to have these but we recommend that you take either snow chains or all-weather tyres at these locations.
Snow chains are also available in some other rental locations. The fee for snow chains depends on where you are renting but you can expect it to be between 72.00 EUR and 90.35 EUR a rental.
If any snow chain is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement pair. The costs of this are based on the replacement value and based on experience, rate between 69 EUR and 100 EUR plus rental costs.
We can not fit snow chains for you, and we can not arrange for them to be fitted.

Travel Into Other Countries

International journeys outside Germany are permitted for certain countries but generally require prior approval by Avis.
If approved by Avis, a Cross Border Fee (CBF) is payable. This amounts to Euro 9.41 per day,
and maximum Euro 43.92 per rental.
If approval has been given, the following provisions shall apply:

What countries am I allowed to take the vehicle to?

You are only allowed to use the vehicle in the following countries: Austria, Andorra, Belgium, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Finland, Liechtenstein, Great Britain, Hungary, Croatia, Italy, Ireland, Luxemburg, Monaco, Norway, Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, San Marino, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia.

Entries into Italy (I), Czech Republic (CZ), Croatia (HR), France (F), Hungary (H), Poland (PL), Slovakia (SK) and Slovenia (SLO) are not allowed for vehicles of car group F.
Porsche vehicles may be driven in Germany (D), Austria (A) and Switzerland (CH) only.
It is prohibited driving our vehicles into Albania (AL), Azerbaijan (AZ), Bulgaria (BG), Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH), Belarus (BY), Cyprus (CY), Estonia (EST), Georgia (GE), Greece (GR), Iceland (IS), Kazakhstan (KZ), Kosovo (RKS), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Malta (M), Macedonia (MK), Moldavia (MD), Montenegro (MNE), Romania (RO), Russia (RUS), Serbia (SRB), Turkey (TR), Ukraine (UA) and any country outside continental Europe.
Nor is it permitted to use our vehicles on the Balearic Islands, Canaries, Corsica, Crete, Sardinia

Any infringement of or non-compliance with any of the above provisions shall entitle Avis to terminate the rental agreement without notice or to withdraw from the rental agreement. Claims for compensation by the renter are excluded in such a case. Avis's entitlement to compensation for any damage incurred as a result of the violation of any of the above provisions shall remain unaffected.

Can I buy a product to allow me to drive in other countries?

No, regrettably, we do not offer any products which enable you to drive in other countries.

Please note entries into France (F), Italy (I), Czech Republic (CZ), Croatia (HR), Hungary (H), Poland (PL), Slovakia (SK) and Slovenia (SLO) are not allowed for vehicles of car group F. 

 

 

 


Fuel Policy

You can book your GPS on-line, but you cannot pre-pay for it on-line. It will be charged at the desk. Rates are 15 EUR per day.


Insurance

If you have booked a rate that includes the basic insurance (CDW = collision damage waiver and theft protection), then in the case of an accident you will be liable for the first 1322.00 EUR+VAT to 2643.00 EUR+VAT depending on the car size, for any damage that is caused to your rental car.

Restrictions may be reduced where renters provide their own fully comprehensive insurance cover, by prior arrangement only. If you have your own insurance cover, you must produce a copy of your motor insurance policy at the time of rental.

You have the option to purchase additional insurance at the desk, which will reduce your excess to 0, with the exception of keys. The rate for this additional insurance is from 19.50 EUR to 28 EUR per day including VAT,depending on the car size. Windscreen cover is available from 4 EUR per day including VAT.


One Way Fees

If a rental is subject to a one-way fee, this will be included in the rate you are quoted.


Travel Into Other Countries

If you wish to drive the car into Northern Ireland your rental will be subject to a cross border coverage fee of EUR 34. This fee covers cross border vehicle retrieval in case of breakdown. Avis cars may not be taken outside Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.


Voucher

  • Avis and Avis-honored vouchers are accepted as payment only. Renters must also present an Avis-honored credit card.
  • MCO (Miscellaneous Charge Order): This in an airline document a travel agent may use for prepayment if they have no Avis vouchers. MCOs are not accepted in Ireland,
