Standard Motor Vehicle Insurance (called Loss Damage Waiver or LDW) is mandatory and included in the rate. This limits the renter's financial responsibility for loss or damage to the Avis vehicle (if you comply with the Avis Rental Agreement Terms & Conditions).

In New Zealand, if your vehicle suffers or causes damage an excess normally applies. The standard excess in most cases is NZ$3000 + GST for cars and NZ$3750 + GST for SUVs.

Avis, where permitted, also offer additional optional coverages for Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), Personal Effects and Baggage Insurance (PEB), and Excess Reduction (ER).

Note: The excess may vary by age of renter, location, type of vehicle and rate. Excess Reduction (ER) does not cover certain loss or damage and cannot be waived in full.

The Avis Protection Package is an optional all-inclusive package which gives you and your family coverage for things like: damage to the Avis rental car, your personal belongings and personal injury.

The package comprises Excess Reduction (ER), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), and Personal Effects and Baggage Insurance (PEB).

You can select the Avis Protection Package or individual insurance options when making a reservation. By purchasing the package you pay less than if you purchased each coverage separately.

Preferred Members who have registered with Avis.co.nz and have a My Avis profile can login to modify their protections and coverages.

After you login, click the "Edit" link on the "Protections/Coverages" module on the My Account page.

Choose which protections or coverages you'd like to accept or decline, and submit the form. These changes will take a few days to process, but will automatically update in your profile and apply to future reservations.
